Eurovision bingo 2018: what to look out for in Lisbon

Ludicrous costumes, awkward banter, shameless political voting… as any Eurovision fan can tell you, there is something comforting about watching these familiar tropes play out at Eurovision Song Contests year after year.

And this year, it’s Lisbon’s turn to put on the show of a lifetime for the millions of TV viewers who will watch 26 countries battle it out in the grand final on Saturday night.

UK entry SuRie will be carrying the nation’s hopes on her shoulders with her synthpop ballad Storm, but she will face stiff competition in Portugal.

Who will win is anyone’s guess, especially after long-time frontrunner Israel found themselves knocked off the bookies’ top spot earlier this week by a surprise surge for Cyprus.

Easier to predict, however, are some other things we might see on the night. From bizarre folk dancing to eye-popping special effects, there are more than a few Eurovision traditions that show no signs of going anywhere.
