Charity of the week: Graywolf Press
Graywolf Press is a champion of aspiring authors whose works are often overlooked by larger publishers.
As a champion of aspiring authors whose works are often overlooked by larger publishers, Graywolf Press (graywolfpress.org) works on the premise that all outstanding writers deserve to be heard in America’s crowded literary marketplace, where five publishing houses now produce 80 percent of the books. Currently celebrating its 40th anniversary, Graywolf has grown over the years from a one-man operation into a leading nonprofit publisher of novels, short stories, and memoirs, as well as more-difficult-to-publish genres like poetry collections and translations. Among those it has published are critic Sven Birkerts and poets Natasha Trethewey, Dana Gioia, and Tomas Tranströmer. Dedicated to the promotion of high-quality contemporary literature, Graywolf engages readers with author readings, lectures, and numerous online contests and book giveaways.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
