Independent Lens: Don’t Stop Believin’—Everyman’s Journey
Just a city boy, born and raised in Manila, Filipino singer Arnel Pineda lucked into the gig of a lifetime several years ago. Guitarist Neal Schon of Journey was searching for a new lead singer for the ever-popular arena-rock band when he happened upon Pineda belting out Journey tunes in some YouTube videos. The rest is rock history, or at least an excuse for an affable documentary about the band’s next tour. Monday, Sept. 30, at 10 p.m., PBS; check local listings

Eddie Aikau
In surfing circles, Eddie Aikau is a demigod. A lifeguard and world-class surfer, the Maui native and big-wave champion routinely braved 30-foot waves to save imperiled swimmers and died at his peak, in 1972, while trying to rescue passengers from a capsized boat. This elegiac account of his life kicks off a new season for ESPN’s acclaimed documentary series. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 8 p.m., ESPN
Super Fun Night
Plump film actress Rebel Wilson serves as creator and star of this promising new comedy series about three nerdy girlfriends who are stepping out into the dating world after years of staying in together every Friday night. The show’s humor—which crosses Girls with Bridesmaids—has divided critics. But with a little polish, Wilson’s first TV project could be a hit. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 9:30 p.m., ABC

Denied conscientious-objector status when he refused to serve in the Army during the Vietnam War, Muhammad Ali was exiled from boxing for years while he battled a draft-evasion conviction. This dramatization of the debate that his appeal triggered inside the Supreme Court casts Christopher Plummer, Frank Langella, and Danny Glover as key justices. Saturday, Oct. 5, at 8 p.m., HBO
Masterpiece Classic: The Paradise
Victorian-era department stores aspired to be gardens of earthly delights. The fictional retail emporium at the center of this multipart costume drama is also the setting of romance and social drama, as a pretty shopgirl from the sticks (Joanna Vanderham) catches the eye of the betrothed and enigmatic owner (Emun Elliott). Adapted from an Émile Zola novel. Sunday, Oct. 6, at 9 p.m., PBS; check local listings
