A 9-year-old from Chelmsford has become the youngest American chess player to reach expert level since recordkeeping began.

A 9-year-old from Chelmsford, Mass., has become the youngest American chess player to reach expert level since recordkeeping began. Carissa Yip has risen through the rankings of the U.S. Chess Federation and is now in the top 7 percent of its membership. Yip’s father taught her the game three years ago, and she was beating him regularly within a year. Her next milestone—aside from starting the fifth grade—is to become a chess master, though her ultimate goal is to become the first female world champion. “It’s not like the rating matters,” she said.
