Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer

The Russian feminist collective Pussy Riot has won many hearts and minds in the West since three masked members were arrested last year for unleashing their brand of punk-rock protest inside a Moscow cathedral. This documentary, which premiered at Sundance, uses courtroom footage and clips of previous performances to show how a group of young women who were fighting for gender equality in Putin’s Russia won the world’s attention while unwittingly obscuring their own message. Fans of The Closer seem to have remained loyal followers of this spinoff, which was cable’s top-rated new series last year. Since star Kyra Sedgwick departed, the LAPD’s major-crimes division has been led by Capt. Sharon Raydor, played by two-time Oscar nominee Mary McDonnell. As Season 2 begins, Raydor and her mostly familiar crew work to win a confession after the pregnant wife of a famous director is murdered. Monday, June 10, at 9 p.m., TNT

Magic City

Echoes of Mad Men and Martin Scorsese’s Casino ring throughout this period drama, set at a glitzy Miami Beach hotel in the late 1950s. Though it doesn’t yet have the polish of its influences, the series shows signs of maturing as it heads into its second season. Jeffrey Dean Morgan returns as hotelier Ike Evans, while James Caan and Esai Morales help beef up the cast. Friday, June 14, at 9 p.m., Starz

True Blood

As Season 6 begins and series creator Alan Ball steps away from day-to-day production, changes are coming to Bon Temps, La. Anna Paquin is back as Sookie Stackhouse, but hunky vampire Bill (Stephen Moyer) has been transformed into an evil demigod, and all signs point to an all-out war between the vampires and the humans. Sunday, June 16, at 9 p.m., HBO

Masterpiece: Mystery! Inspector Lewis, Series VI

Beneath its academic exterior, Oxford, England, is apparently a hotbed of murder mysteries. In Season 6 of this spinoff of the Inspector Morse series, Kevin Whately returns as Inspector Lewis to investigate three new killings. In the first episode, Lewis and his sidekick, Hathaway (Laurence Fox), probe the death of a psychic who was living a curious double life. Sunday, June 16, at 9 p.m., PBS; check local listings
