Moss’s photo phobia

For one of the most photographed women on earth, Kate Moss is surprisingly camera shy, said James Fox in Vanity Fair. The model is fine when she’s working and in character. But she hates being captured as herself. “I’m terrible at a snapshot. Terrible. I blink all the time.” On her wedding day, she was so worried about the pictures that she turned to a friend, designer John Galliano, for help. “I said, ‘You’ve got to give me a character.’ [He] said, ‘You have a secret—you are the last of the English roses. Hide under that veil. When he lifts it, he’s going to see your wanton past!’” In fact, Moss isn’t as wanton as she might seem. At age 17, she appeared straddling a semi-naked Mark Wahlberg in a Calvin Klein campaign. It made her world famous, but she felt so uncomfortable that afterward, she suffered a nervous breakdown. “I couldn’t get out of bed for two weeks.” As a teenager, she hated posing topless, too, partly because she considered herself flat-chested. “But they were like, ‘If you don’t do it, then we’re not going to book you again.’ So I’d lock myself in the toilet and cry and then come out and do it.”
