Hefeweizen: A singular weiss

A U.S.-made hefeweizen is hard to find.

A U.S.-made hefeweizen is hard to find, said Eric Asimov in The New York Times. Domestic brewers seem to love using the term, which in Germany means a refreshing but cloudy beer made with specialized yeasts and at least 50 percent wheat. Yet our panel found only a handful that conformed to the marvelous traditional style.

Sierra Nevada Kellerweis Our favorite was this “dry, tart” wheat beer, which delivers classic aromas of hefeweizen—clove, banana, and bubble gum.

Two Brothers Ebel’s Weiss Beer Germans drink hefeweizen with a late breakfast, and this “beautifully cloudy” brew “made me dream of sitting in a beer garden in the late-morning sun.”
