Schmooze. Remember, the front desk is there to accommodate you. So make friendly and “ask nicely” for an upgrade, casually mentioning if you’re staying for a special event like a birthday or bachelor party.
Do your homework. Learn the names of the hotel’s better suites before you arrive. Asking for a specific room increases your odds of success. If you don’t know a suite’s name, still be specific. For instance, ask for a pool view instead of a “better” room. “This simplifies the clerk’s search.”
Point out flaws. In the era of online customer reviews, hotels are eager to make amends if they fail you. It’s also easier to move you when your AC is broken than to spot-treat the problem.
Upgrade the room you’re in. If all else fails, at least request “a one-night perk,” such as free Wi-Fi, breakfast, or gym access.
