Road-food heaven: Oahu’s Route 83
Along with gorgeous beaches and world-class surf, travelers will find tasty and inexpensive food.
There are a lot of reasons to cruise Route 83 in Oahu, said the editors of Sunset. The Windward Coast and the North Shore of Hawaii’s most populous island are lined with gorgeous beaches and buffeted by world-class surf. But the coast’s main highway is also home to Hawaii’s “tastiest, least expensive food,” and that makes it our favorite “road-food route” in the entire western U.S.
Holo Holo Stop Kaneohe. You can’t find a more Hawaiian enterprise than this humble roadside truck. Try the laulau (a taro-wrapped pork), the lomilomi salmon (a salmon-and-tomato salad), and the taro-based sweet known as kulolo. 47-528 Kamehameha Hwy., (808) 230-0062
The Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck Kahuku. The vehicle itself may look abandoned, but it’s the best of the North Shore shrimp trucks. Not to be missed is the butter-garlic shrimp—“shelled, butterflied, and coated with caramelized garlic bits.” 56-580 Kamehameha Hwy., (808) 389-1173

Ted’s Bakery Sunset Beach. Finish the dining drive with a Sunset Beach dessert. Coconut milk is known as haupia, and Ted’s makes a chocolate haupia pie that has been “fortifying big-wave surfers for years.” 59-024 Kamehameha Hwy., (808) 638-8207
