Charity of the week: The Wildlife Conservation Network

The programs of The Wildlife Conservation Network help protect endangered animals like the Ethiopian wolf and the Andean cat.

The Wildlife Conservation Network (wildlifeconservationnetwork.org) protects endangered species and preserves their threatened natural habitats in developing countries around the world. The organization approaches its mission with a venture-capital model, partnering with independent, field-based conservationists in countries such as Zimbabwe, Colombia, and Uzbekistan, and providing them with financial support, strategic planning, and technological assistance. Their innovative programs help protect critically endangered animals like the Ethiopian wolf, the Andean cat, Central Asia’s saiga antelope, and the cottontop tamarin, a South American monkey. These programs include efforts to educate and provide economic opportunities and health initiatives for local communities so that people and wildlife can thrive side by side.

Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
