Funding for music education, where it exists at all, is on the chopping block around the country. Little Kids Rock (littlekids​rock.org) aims to restore and revitalize our disappearing music programs by bringing free musical instruments and instruction to underserved public schools. Since 2002, the organization has taught more than 215,000 children, many of them from low-income families, in free music classes in more than 1,000 public schools in 24 U.S. cities. It has given away more than 30,000 instruments, and trained more than 1,600 teachers in music instruction. Kids learn not just to play music, but also to compose in styles that include rock, blues, rap, and hip-hop.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
