Where to buy...Lori La Mont
La Mont's watercolors are on display and for sale at Frank Pictures in Santa Monica.
Branding a cow with a hot iron is one way to assert ownership over the animal kingdom. Painter Lori La Mont is interested in the myriad effects of affixing labels to other species. La Mont’s Cockfight No. 2 (2011) depicts two roosters engaged in midair struggle, their legs emblazoned with Purina, Burberry, and Disney logos just above the talons. Such exquisite watercolors inescapably invoke the watercolors of 19th-century naturalist John James Audubon, but they also force us to consider why sports teams and corporations often want to associate themselves with certain animal attributes. At Frank Pictures, 2525 Michigan Ave., Santa Monica, Calif., (310) 828-0211. Through Jan. 25. Prices range from $8,000 to $12,000.
