Show of the week: POV: Armadillo
This 2009 documentary about a platoon of Danish soldiers at a military base in Afghanistan’s Helmand province won the Critics’ Week Grand Prix at Cannes.
Filmed in 2009, this powerful documentary follows a platoon of Danish soldiers stationed at a military base in Afghanistan’s embattled Helmand province. Cameras capture the alternating boredom and terror of the young men as they quickly lose their illusions about a war in which it is difficult to distinguish noncombatants from the enemy. The film won the Critics’ Week Grand Prix at Cannes, but raised controversy in Denmark and Europe over its startling climax, in which the soldiers appear to execute wounded Taliban.
