Charity of the week: Civil War Trust
Civil War Trust preserves Civil War battlefields and educates Americans about the history of the country's bloodiest war.
Civil War Trust (civilwar.org) has preserved 30,000 acres on 110 Civil War battlefields in 20 states as it works to educate Americans about the history and significance of America’s bloodiest war. This year alone, it has helped to block the construction of a casino near the site of the Battle of Gettysburg, and to convince Wal-Mart to reposition a store it had planned to build on the Wilderness Battlefield in Virginia. The trust recently developed Battle Apps, GPS-enabled smartphone tours of Gettysburg, Pa., and Fredericksburg and Manassas, Va. To mark the Civil War’s sesquicentennial, the trust seeks to raise $40 million in the next five years to restore 20,000 further acres of “hallowed ground.”
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator. Charity Navigator ranks not-for-profit organizations on the effectiveness of their programs, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
