Charity of the week: Greater New Orleans Foundation

Throughout the catastrophes of Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion, the Greater New Orleans Foundation has been providing affected communities with grants and services.

Since 2005, no American city has suffered more catastrophes than New Orleans. The city was still struggling to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina when the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in April 2010, inundating the Gulf Coast with crude oil. Throughout it all, the Greater New Orleans Foundation (gnof.org) has supplied grants to communities most affected by the disasters, rounded up donors, and coordinated responses. Founded as the Community Chest of New Orleans in 1923, the foundation continues to provide a wide range of services, “all focused on the goal of improving the greater New Orleans region.”

Each charity highlighted on this page has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, the largest evaluator of charities in America. Charity Navigator ranks not-for-profit organizations on their financial strength, the effectiveness of their programs, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
