Tanker driver hoses burning car with milk
The quick-thinking driver of a milk tanker in Northern Ireland saved the lives of two car-crash victims trapped in a burning car by dousing the flames with milk. When he came across the crash scene, Michael Coyle positioned his truck so he could hose the fire from the tank’s rear valve. Firefighters and ambulances arrived on the scene, rescued the trapped men, and took them to the hospital, where they were listed in stable condition. “It was down to the driver’s actions that the two men were saved,” said fire official Martin Jeffrey.

A 3-year-old cat that had been missing for two days in Northern California returned home with an arrow through his head but apparently no worse for wear. His owners rushed the cat to the vet, and the arrow, which had narrowly missed his brain, was successfully removed. “The cat is actually a very rambunctious guy and trying to get back outside,” said Todd Stosuy, a Santa Cruz County animal-care official. “But the owners have decided that he’s an inside cat now. He’s under house arrest.” The search continues for the shooter.
Lottery winnings go to new running track
Evergreen High School in White Center, Wash., has its janitor to thank for a new running track. Tyrone Curry won $3.4 million in the lottery five years ago, but has continued to work at the school as a custodian and coach for track and basketball. Last week, he donated $40,000 toward the installation of a new track. “Tyrone goes above and beyond in the sports he coaches,” said senior Devante Botello. “It’s a deep feeling. All I can say is ‘thanks.’” Curry is retiring this year after 34 years. “Kids do things for you,” Curry said. “They keep you young.”
