New cars: 2011 Lexus CT 200h Hybrid
What the critics say about the $29,120 Lexus CT 200h Hybrid
AutoWeek
The Lexus CT 200h “shares a lot of componentry” with its sister ship, the Toyota Prius—including its gas/electric hybrid system. But if it could be called an upgrade on a Prius, it could also be considered “another disappointing pretender trying to pass itself off as a performance hybrid and not fooling anyone.” While you’ll be happy with the “stiffened chassis” and impressive fuel economy, acceleration “takes almost forever.”

Sure, the CT 200h has the same 1.8-liter engine as Toyota’s signature hybrid, but it’s “certainly not a Prius with a Lexus badge.” It has a “Lexus-quality interior and Lexus-quality ride,” along with a more aggressive exterior look and choice of Normal, Eco, and Sport driving modes. If you long for a car with “real hybrid cred” but need a vehicle that’s a bit upscale, the CT 200h might be the answer.
Car and Driver
It’s no sports car, but “the tradeoff is excellent mileage”—estimated at 42 mpg in combined city/highway driving. It also offers lots of standard amenities—including eight airbags and hands-free Bluetooth phone and audio. Still, given this Lexus’ “sloth and dull personality,” we’d opt for the “much cheaper” Prius.
