Chilean miner Edison Pena's 'totally adorable' 'Letterman' appearance
In NYC to run the marathon, one of "Los 33" stopped by the "Late Show" and gave an impromptu Elvis performance
The video: Edison Peña, one of the 33 rescued Chilean miners, put in a memorable appearance on the "Late Show with David Letterman" last night. Peña, noted for being an Elvis fan and jogging an hour each day while underground to stay fit ("I was running to be an active participant in my own salvation," he has said), is in New York to run in Sunday's marathon. Talking with Letterman for three full segments, Peña gave a charming, candid interview with the aid of a translator. He also broke into a rousing, "totally adorable" rendition of Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" — no translation needed.
The reaction: Peña had "Letterman cracking up the whole night, all while communicating through an interpreter," says Dorsey Shaw in New York. "The guy's a natural." Indeed, says Joe Coscarelli in the Los Angeles Times. He showed that "showmanship is universal." Letterman was beside himself, says Marianne Garvey at E!. "The normally biting talk-show host turned to mush." See for yourself below:
