The video: Miley Cyrus is only 17, but the former star of Disney's "Hannah Montana" is no stranger to controversy. Her latest mini-scandal erupted with the release of the video for her single, "Who Owns My Heart." The action starts with Cyrus wearing her skivvies and a blindfold in bed. Then she goes to a nightclub and grinds with older men. Parents Television Council President Tim Winter condemned the "sexualized" nature of the video, saying it is "diametrically opposed" to the wholesome image fans expect from her. "Miley built her fame and fortune entirely on the backs of young girls," Winter said, "and it saddens us that she seems so eager to distance herself from that fanbase so rapidly."
The reaction: Nobody is saying that Miley Cyrus has to appeal to the Hannah Montana crowd forever, says Howard Gensler at the Philadelphia Daily News. But it is possible for a young woman to excel as an entertainer without "sliding down a stripper poll in a bra." Still, Miley will be 18 next month, and if she wants to take the "Britney, Lindsay route to stardom," that's her business. This is a transition plenty of teen stars go through as they grow up, says blogger Mary at The Mommyologist.
