Book of the week: The Hard Times Guide to Retirement Security by Mark Miller
Miller takes a “let’s-roll-up-the-sleeves” approach to financial security and doesn't sugarcoat the facts.

Mark Miller’s new book is “spot on” when it comes to the new realities of retirement, said Chris Farrell in the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The scary truth is “it will be very difficult for most people to set aside enough money to maintain their pre-retirement standard of living in old age.” Miller doesn’t sugarcoat the facts, but also “isn’t alarmist or despairing.” Instead, he takes a “let’s-roll-up-the-sleeves” approach to financial security. Miller offers solid advice for would-be retirees, said Kerry Hannon in USA Today. “Staying on the job even a few years longer than planned is one of Miller’s chief recommendations.” Not only does this allow you to save more, it gives you access to employer-sponsored health insurance. Miller thus devotes several chapters to thriving in the “50-plus job market,” in which job candidates must walk a fine line between marketing their experience and succumbing to a “been there, done that” attitude.
