Karl Rove on trial
A special prosecutor has questions about Rove’s role in Bush’s 2006 purge of U.S. attorneys
Karl Rove is on the spot, said David Johnston in The New York Times. The former political strategist for George W. Bush is being interviewed by federal prosecutor Nora Dannehy over what role, if any, he played in the allegedly political motivated firing of nine U.S. Attorneys in 2006. “Rove’s role in the firings has never been completely understood,” and his allies say he only had “peripheral involvement.”
Rove will “no doubt be a wealth of information for Dannehy,” said Steve Benen in The Washington Monthly. One of the fired Republican prosecutors, David Iglesias, claims Rove can provide evidence of illegal activity, and other sources place him as the originator of the idea to terminate those U.S. Attorneys who weren’t “loyal Bushies.”
If “no one is above the law,” then of course the Obama prosecutors will also haul in Bill Clinon and Janet Reno, said the blog HotAirPundit, since they fired “EVERY U.S. Attorney in 1993.” U.S. Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the president, but they can’t be fired for improper reasons. Odd, then, that “Bush and Reagan holdovers didn’t make the cut” in 1993.
