The Breaker
Palm Beach, Fla.
The Breakers has been a swank seaside resort “for ages,” said Mark Spivak in National Geographic Traveler. Opened in 1896, it immediately established Palm Beach as “the winter social capital of the U.S.” Back then, wealthy couples arrived with steamer trunks and stayed for the season. Now working executives drop in for the weekend in Learjets and report back to work on Monday. Most rooms are decorated in floral prints or pastels, and new bungalows at poolside offer open-sky showers, flat-screen TVs, and Wi-Fi. Though celebrities frequent the Breakers, “even heads of state are treated anonymously, if that is their heart’s desire.”
