August was a fruitful month for both Barack Obama and John McCain—Obama raised more money than any presidential candidate in history, and McCain had his best month ever.

Campaign records shattered

Barack Obama’s campaign raised $66 million in August, the largest monthly haul of any presidential candidate in history. August was also John McCain’s best month. His campaign took in $47 million and will receive another $84 million in public funds through Nov. 4. Obama opted to forgo public funding. Both campaigns will also benefit from national party fundraising, in which Republicans have surpassed Democrats.
