Campaign records shattered
Barack Obama’s campaign raised $66 million in August, the largest monthly haul of any presidential candidate in history. August was also John McCain’s best month. His campaign took in $47 million and will receive another $84 million in public funds through Nov. 4. Obama opted to forgo public funding. Both campaigns will also benefit from national party fundraising, in which Republicans have surpassed Democrats.

A federal judge overturned a Bush administration plan to expand snowmobile access to Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. The plan would have allowed parks to admit 540 snowmobiles per year, twice what the parks currently allow. But Judge Emmet Sullivan blocked the proposed change, calling it “arbitrary, capricious, and contrary to law.” Environmental groups argued that additional snowmobiles would add to pollution and disrupt wildlife.
