California Asian strip-mall oases
Many of California's best Asian restaurants are found outside the big cities along the main streets and in the strip malls of suburbia.
California is now home to nearly 5 million people of Asian descent, said Andrea Nguyen in Saveur. In a recent “food-focused tour of the state,” my husband and I discovered that California’s best Asian food can be found among “the unprepossessing strip malls and palm-lined main streets of suburbia.” The reason: The most concentrated Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, and other Asian communities are situated outside the big cities. Here are our favorites:
Asian Garden Mall, Westminster
More Vietnamese live in this municipality’s Little Saigon than in any city outside Vietnam. Try the “garlicky stewed meatballs and fried bananas.” 9200 Bolsa Ave., (714) 894-3854

Mei Long Village, San Gabriel
Set in a 12-acre complex known as “the Great Mall of China” for its wide array of Chinese cuisines. The pork-filled dumplings at this Shanghainese restaurant “were among the most delicate” I’ve ever tasted. 301 W. Valley Blvd., (626) 284-4769
Pho Bac Hoa Viet, Sacramento
A specialty here is savory pho, “the classic Vietnamese noodle soup.” 6645 Stockton Blvd., No. 300, (916) 399-1688
