Libraries in the Detroit area have been reporting renewed interest from teenagers ever since they started stocking PlayStation, Xbox, and Wii systems and staging videogame tournaments. The new library-goers may not actually be reading, officials concede, but getting them in the door is a good first step. “Do we think it’s necessary for libraries to diversify to give the people what they want?” said Jude Halloran, director of the Highland Township Public Library. “Yes.”

Prison inmates in New York City will no longer have access to butter, whole milk, or candy. A new menu unveiled by the city’s Department of Correction also contains no white bread or sweetened drinks, and is heavy on fresh fruit and steamed vegetables. The new menu is no cheaper than its predecessor, said Correction Commissioner Martin Horn, but with fewer inmates “having a stroke or going into diabetic shock,” it will save taxpayers money in the long run. Besides, “these people are in our custody,” said Horn. “We have a moral obligation to make sound choices for them.”
