Socialist divorce

Failed Socialist presidential contender Ségolène Royal this week announced her split from Francois Hollande, her longtime companion and father of her four children. In a book out this week, Royal is quoted as saying she had asked Hollande “to move out of the house” because he was having an affair “which has been detailed in books and newspapers.” Hollande, who is head of the Socialist Party, said the separation did not have “political causes or political consequences.” But some Socialists said the obvious tension in the couple’s relationship might have hurt Royal’s campaign. Royal says she will run to replace her ex as party head if the Socialists accept her program for reform.
