Father convicted in honor killing.

A Kurdish immigrant was convicted this week of ordering a hit on his daughter because she had left an arranged marriage. Mahmod Mahmod and his brother, Ari Mahmod, were convicted of plotting the murder of Banaz Mahmod, 20. The family fled from Iraq in 1998, when Banaz was 11, and the father frequently beat her for becoming too Westernized. Banaz went to the police at least four times, once covered in blood, but they offered no protection. Last year, her body was found buried in the family garden, three months after she had been strangled with a bootlace. Two suspects have pleaded guilty to involvement in the murder, while two others fled the country. In the past decade, at least 25 Muslim women in Britain have been killed by relatives for so-called honor breaches.
