France has set tough new quotas for the number of illegal immigrants to be expelled each month. Brice Hortefeux, who heads the newly created Ministry of Immigration, Integration, National Identity, and Co–Development, said he intended to expel 25,000 people by the end of the year. He also said he aimed for 125,000 arrests this year for illegal entry or illegal residence. Hortefeux said the crackdown was intended to “dismantle networks that exploit the misery of illegal immigrants.” The new ministry was the idea of President Nicolas Sarkozy, who promised during his campaign to get tough with criminals, including illegal immigrants.
