Ashburn, Ga.
Students at Turner County High School in rural Ashburn, Ga., held an integrated prom last week, the first in their school’s history. Previously, black and white students opted to hold separate formal dances, which were privately funded. But this year, the school’s 213 upperclassmen voted to hold a single, integrated prom under the auspices of the school. “We’ve been separated for a while,” said John Holmes, a 16-year-old. “I sure appreciate how the school got us all together, and we had a blast.” Principal Chad Stone said the integrated prom will now become an official yearly event.
