Padilla tape missing
The week's news at a glance.
Miami
A videotape of accused al Qaida terrorist Jose Padilla’s final interrogation is missing, Army officials admitted last week, and defense lawyers say that what’s on the tape may explain why Padilla doesn’t trust them. Padilla, who is charged with aiding a terrorist organization, has been in custody since 2002. Since then, intelligence officials and prosecutors have interrogated him at least 88 times, and DVDs of 87 sessions have been turned over to the defense. Padilla’s lawyers say the missing tape may explain why Padilla suspects his lawyers of being government agents. Judge Marcia Cooke has ruled that Padilla is competent to stand trial, despite defense claims that he suffered deep psychological damage as a result of his captivity.
