There goes the judge
The week's news at a glance.
Islamabad
Hundreds of lawyers in cities across Pakistan protested this week against the sudden firing of the nation’s highest-ranking judge. Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry was appointed by President Pervez Musharraf in 2005, but has proved to be a thorn in Musharraf’s side. Chaudhry has been initiating proceedings in cases involving enforced disappearances; some 400 people have disappeared in Pakistan since the country began cooperating with the U.S.-led war on terror. Last week, Musharraf fired Chaudhry, citing no reason. Chaudhry said he would fight his dismissal in court.
