Home of Hannibal
The week's news at a glance.
Vilnius, Lithuania
Lithuania is capitalizing on the popularity of fictional serial killer and cannibal Hannibal Lecter. The character, created in novels by Thomas Harris and made famous by the hit movie The Silence of the Lambs, is of Lithuanian origin. The latest movie, Hannibal Rising, shows Lecter’s early days. Born into a noble Lithuanian family, Hannibal is traumatized when his sister is killed and eaten by militiamen during World War II. One Lithuanian tourism agency is now offering Hannibal tours, which take in sites from the movie and culminate in a feast. On the menu, presumably, are fava beans and Chianti, Lecter’s preferred accompaniment to human liver.
