Mall massacre
The week's news at a glance.
Salt Lake City
A trench coat–wearing teenager armed with a shotgun and a pistol opened fire in Salt Lake City’s Trolley Square mall this week, killing five people and wounding four before an off-duty police officer gunned him down. Police say the killer, identified as Sulejman Talovic, an 18-year-old Bosnian refugee living in Salt Lake City with his mother, was determined “to kill a large number of people.” Witnesses say Talovic appeared calm as he walked through the mall shooting at random strangers. Several hours after the rampage, police were still locating shocked shoppers and store workers who were hunkered down, waiting for the all-clear. “He didn’t seem upset or like he was on a rampage,” said Bath & Body Works manager Marie Smith, 23. Police were not commenting about a possible motive.
