San Francisco
Days after admitting to an affair with the wife of a close aide, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom announced this week he was seeking counseling for alcohol abuse. “I have come to the conclusion that I will be a better person without alcohol in my life,” the 39-year-old mayor said. Last week, Newsom, who is divorced, admitted he had an affair in 2005 with Ruby Rippey-Tourk, then his appointments secretary. She is married to Alex Tourk, Newsom’s deputy chief of staff until his resignation last week. “My problems with alcohol are not an excuse for personal lapses in judgment,” Newsom said.
