Squatters riot
The week's news at a glance.
Copenhagen, Denmark
More than 300 demonstrators were arrested in Copenhagen this week when protests against an eviction turned violent. The demonstration was led by left-wing activists who have been squatting rent-free in a downtown youth center since 1982. A Christian group bought the building in 2000, and after a long court battle, the squatters were ordered to leave this month. At this week’s rally, protestors pried up cobblestones and hurled them at police. Some rioters shot off bottle rockets at police officers. “It was extremely violent. It looked like a war zone,” said police spokesman Flemming Steen Munch. “It’s been many years since we last had to use tear gas on the streets.”
