Desperate search

Mount Hood, Ore.
A day after finding one climber dead, rescuers this week called off a frantic search for two men missing on Oregon’s Mount Hood. Kelly James, 48, was found dead near the summit of the 11,239-foot peak. A heavy storm overtook James, Jerry Cooke, and Brian Hall on Dec. 10, as they attempted to climb the mountain’s steep north face. Their last communication was a cell phone call from James to his wife, Karen, telling her that his companions were going for help. Experts said it was unlikely anyone could have survived this long. “We’ve done everything we can at this point,” said Sheriff Joe Wampler.
