Poor losers
The week's news at a glance.
Kinshasa, Congo
Supporters of the loser in Congo’s presidential election battled police in the streets of Kinshasa this week and set fire to the Supreme Court building. The electoral board ruled last week that incumbent President Joseph Kabila had defeated former rebel leader Jean-Pierre Bemba in the second round of voting, held at the end of October. Bemba alleged fraud, and the Supreme Court was considering his case when Bemba supporters burst into the building, looting offices and starting a fire. South African observers have pronounced the election fair.
