Hamas vs. Fatah
The week's news at a glance.
Gaza
Militants from the two leading Palestinian parties battled in Gaza this week in the worst internal violence since the Palestinian Authority was created in 1994. At least 10 people were killed, and Palestinian newspapers began predicting civil war. Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, an offshoot of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah, threatened to kill the leaders of Hamas, the militant Islamic party that currently runs the government. The fighting started among government workers angry because Hamas was unable to pay them. The Palestinian government is dependent on U.S. and European Union aid, but the West refuses to fund it until Hamas recognizes Israel’s right to exist.
