Reformer murdered
The week's news at a glance.
Moscow
Andrei Kozlov, deputy chairman of the Central Bank of Russia, was killed in a professional hit while leaving a company soccer game. Two gunmen shot him and his bodyguard as they exited the locker room. Kozlov is the highest-ranking official to be killed since President Vladimir Putin took office, and analysts fear his murder signals the end of an unofficial truce between the Kremlin and the Russian mafia. Kozlov was in charge of the bank’s anti-corruption division and had been successful in cracking down on money laundering. The banking community is offering a $10 million reward for information on his killers.
