Washington, D.C.
Former White House procurement officer David Safavian was convicted this week of lying to government investigators to conceal his relationship with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Known as one of Abramoff’s champions within the White House, Safavian was found guilty of funneling inside information on government property sales to Abramoff, to help him gain an advantage over other bidders. In return, Abramoff treated Safavian to restaurant meals and an overseas golfing trip. Safavian’s conviction raises the pressure on several members of Congress who had dealings with Abramoff.
