Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Newspapers must stop running photographs of Saudi women, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia told newspaper editors this week. Since Abdullah, a relative moderate, inherited the throne last year, newspapers have begun printing photos of women with their faces uncovered. “One needs to think if he would want his daughter, sister, or wife to appear like that,” Abdullah said. “Of course, no one would.” Saudi Arabia’s Wahhabi Islam forbids a woman from appearing in public unless she is completely covered from head to toe, and accompanied by a male relative.
