A tropical disaster

The week's news at a glance.

Honolulu

Hawaiians this week saw clear skies for the first time since February, as 41 solid days of rain finally came to an end. The heaviest rainfall in more than 50 years flooded streets and homes across the Hawaiian Islands. Honolulu measured more rain in the first three months of 2006 than in all of 2005. On Kauai, a dam burst, killing seven people. The beaches of Waikiki were closed for a week after a sewer line burst, pouring 48 million gallons of raw sewage into the ocean. “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose,” said tourist Susan Orr, who had come to Waikiki from Kansas to celebrate her 50th birthday.
