Islamabad, Pakistan
Demonstrations against the Danish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed turned deadly in Pakistan this week, as mobs rampaged through Islamabad and Lahore. After government buildings and Western fast-food restaurants were set on fire, police responded with tear gas. Two protesters were shot and killed. Pakistani officials appealed to the nation to keep protests peaceful. “What message are we giving out by damaging our own?” said Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi, the chief minister of Punjab province. Nearly 20 people have now died in cartoon-related rioting across the world.
