Twin bombings
The week's news at a glance.
Ahvaz, Iran
Two bombs ripped through a bank and a government building in the oil city of Ahvaz, shortly before Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was set to visit. Eight people were killed and 46 wounded. Ahmadinejad canceled his trip, but his office said the cancellation was due to sandstorms. Officials also tried to squelch speculation that the bombings were a sign of anti-government sentiment in a region dominated by Iran’s Arab minority. “The place where the bombs exploded was a long way from where the president had planned his speech,” said Ahvaz Gov. Mohammad Jafar Samari.
