A U.S. Army officer was found guilty this week of negligent homicide in the 2003 death of an Iraqi general who was in U.S. custody. Chief Warrant Officer Lewis Welshofer Jr. had interrogated Maj. Gen. Abed Hamed Mowhoush, a high-ranking Saddam Hussein loyalist suspected of financing insurgent attacks. Prosecutors said Mowhoush had been bound and placed headfirst in a sleeping bag. He died of asphyxia with Welshofer sitting on him. A jury of six Army officers cleared Welshofer of the more serious charge of murder, which carried a possible life sentence, and instead recommended a reprimand with no jail time.
