Johannesburg
Jacob Zuma, a former deputy president of South Africa and a leading presidential contender, was charged this week with raping the daughter of a political ally. The woman, an HIV-positive AIDS activist, said the attack happened at Zuma’s home last month. Zuma said the sex was consensual. He has not withdrawn his candidacies for leadership of the African National Congress party in 2007 and for the presidency in 2009. But South African political analysts said his political career is probably over. The rape allegation comes on top of a financial scandal that got Zuma fired as deputy president in June.
