A change at ground zero

The week's news at a glance.

New York

New York Gov. George Pataki last week announced the cancellation of a controversial plan to build an International Freedom Center at the World Trade Center site. The center was to include exhibits on the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks as well as tributes to historic struggles for freedom, including displays on the American Revolution and the civil-rights movement. Relatives of Sept. 11 victims had objected, saying they suspected the museum would include “anti-American” messages. Debra Burlingame, whose brother was a pilot on the hijacked airliner that was crashed into the Pentagon, said ground zero should be an “undiluted” memorial to the nearly 3,000 people who were killed by terrorists on that day.
