Iran’s new president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, made a fiery debut address to the United Nations General Assembly this week, declaring that his country has an “inalienable right” to nuclear energy. Iranian officials insist they want nuclear capabilities only to build nuclear power plants, not atomic bombs. But Ahmadinejad said that if the U.S. and the E.U. don’t stop lobbying for U.N. Security Council sanctions against Iran, “we will reconsider our entire approach.” U.S. and European diplomats said Ahmadinejad’s thinly veiled threat to pursue nuclear weapons would make it easier to rally international support for sanctions.
