After 23 straight hours of debate, the Philippines’ House of Representatives this week dismissed impeachment charges against President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The vote was 158–52. Arroyo had been charged with election fraud. But while there were some protests and marches against her, they never became the kind of mass movements that toppled the last two presidents. “The Filipino people mark a glorious day in history,” Arroyo said. “This is a grand display of political maturity that seals our stability and resilience as a nation.” Opposition figures said they would continue to campaign against Arroyo, both in the courts and on the streets.
