U.S. booted from base
The week's news at a glance.
Karshi-Khanabad, Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan’s government formally ordered the U.S. military to leave an Uzbek air base this week, in protest over U.S. support of Uzbek dissidents. Hundreds of Uzbeks had fled to neighboring Kyrgyzstan several months ago, after a bloody government crackdown on an uprising in Andijon. Uzbekistan demanded that they be repatriated, but U.S. officials arranged for their flight to a refugee camp in Romania. In response, Uzbek officials have given the Pentagon six months to vacate an air base used to supply U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Pentagon officials said the eviction is “no big deal” since they can still use Kyrgyz bases.
